Ten Day Trek Across the Andes - Raising Money for Cancer Treatment.
|
Three women who have grown up together will trek across the Andes in tribute of a close friend who has a brain tumour. Hayley Pickard, 30, Helen Perry, 35, and Kerry Webster, 32, from Grimsby decided to take on the challenge after their friend, mother of three, Kylie Moxon, 30, was diagnosed with a terminal cancer in 2010. "We wanted to help Kylie and show that we will be there for her whenever she needs us. We also wanted to help spread the word about brain tumours," says Helen, who is also planning to have her hair shaved off to raise funds for Brain Tumour UK. "I’m a hairdresser and I have offered to shave my head if we can raise £1,000. The way I see it, Kylie will lose her hair and I still have my health so I can certainly lose mine." Kylie, also a hairdresser, was suffering from severe headaches while she was pregnant with her youngest daughter, Annie, who is now six months old. Doctors thought the headaches were related to the pregnancy, but when the condition deteriorated she was offered a CAT scan and a high grade tumour was diagnosed. Kylie’s illness has brought the four women even closer. |

"Kylie is very private, but we are trying to be there for her as much as we can," says Helen They are on hand to take Kylie to her chemotherapy appointments or to look after the children, when needed. "She has been so brave. She is a real girly—girl and loves her heels and fake tan. You would never tell that she is seriously ill. She always looks fantastic," says Helen. Kylie, who wanted to do the trek herself, but is too tired, does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work and meets the team every week even if she has had chemotherapy that day. Helen says: "We have started training already and we’re up at 6.30am five days a week doing cardiovascular work at the gym. "It will take some serious training but this trek will be easy compared to what she is going through." The ancient Inca trail starts in Cusco on October 14 and ends at Machu Picchu 10 days later. Kerry said: "I am a real outdoor girl. I’m really active and have climbed Snowdon before but this will be a real challenge because of the altitude."
The women are hoping to raise a total of £15,000 for Brain Tumour UK through various fundraising initiatives, including sky-diving and a casino night. If you are willing to give your support, please visit www.justgiving.com/charityhhk. Thank You.
